About this release

All up, Son of Science took around five years to write and produce during which time several live performances of these pieces were organised. This included support for Damo Suzuki's first Melbourne performance and Monolake's first Australian gig.

Liner notes

You’re holding a CD and reading these words. The CD contains music. The artist named ‘Andrew Garton’ has created the music on the CD. You think you know this already. But you’re wrong. The CD doesn’t contain music. This CD contains sounds. Music is stuff that you know. This isn’t.

This CD contains sounds that are unique, that defy tradition, that can’t be categorised, that challenge the listener. The sounds will make you laugh, haunt you, uplift you and continually surprise you. And they all come from the fevered imagination of a man who does and will not compromise. By producing this CD he is saying to the world: ‘This is what I do, this is what I am – judge me if you can’.

Like science, which can be used for both good and evil, the sounds on this CD are contradictory, containing both beauty and ugliness, obscurity and lucidity, ambience and tough beats – usually all in the same moment. And it is so many things: it’s opera, it’s pop, it’s hardcore, it’s elevator music, it’s techno, it’s this, it’s that, it’s whatever you want it to be. (Talk about getting your money’s worth!)

But best of all: it’s dangerous, it’s revolutionary and it’s really wild. It’s not music made for 20058. It’s party music for 2999. The science fiction writer Olaf Stapledon, whose book Starmaker has inspired the creator of this CD, would have been proud.
